Reliable thickness measurement with L-Ray

The thickness is the most critical parameter for gypsum boards. A deviant thickness not only affects installation but also the acoustic and fire-resistant properties. 

  • Robust Measurement: Our L-Ray laser sensors are designed to perform in the dusty and demanding environments of gypsum board production. 
  • High Stand-off: The sensors measure from a safe distance, ensuring no contact and no risk of damaging the product.
  • Cross-Profile: Our systems measure the thickness across the entire width of the board, immediately detecting 'warping' or 'cupping' and thinner edges.

    Measuring density and basis weight with M-Rays

    The density of the gypsum core is directly related to the strength and weight of the board. The M-Ray system from Hammer-IMS can measure the basis weight (grams per square meter) of the board. 

    • No Radiation: Unlike traditional nuclear gauges, Hammer-IMS uses safe, non-nuclear millimeter waves. 
    • Process Optimization: By combining basis weight with the thickness measurement from the L-Ray, the product density can be calculated and monitored in real time. This helps optimize the gypsum slurry feed and reduce product weight.

    Integration of moisture measurement

    Controlling the moisture content after the drying process is essential to prevent blistering, weak spots, or board degradation. Hammer-IMS systems can be expanded with moisture sensors to create an all-in-one quality station that measures and reports thickness, weight, and moisture content.

    Surface and Edge Inspection with Edge-Vision-4.0

    The quality of the paper surface and the integrity of the board edges are essential for a smooth finish after installation. Defects can cause problems during taping, mudding, and painting.

    • Defect Detection: The Edge-Vision-4.0 system scans the surface of the board to detect visual defects such as paper tears, blisters, stains, or contamination.
    • Edge Integrity: The system can be configured to inspect the formed edges (e.g., tapered or square) for chips, cracks, or improper paper bonding.
    • Print Verification: It also verifies the presence and quality of any printed markings, such as nailing lines or brand logos.
